Orange Beach, Alabama - A Rad Traveler Review
On the Gulf Coast of Alabama, Orange Beach beckons with its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. With endless sunshine, a vibrant beach culture, and an array of water activities, Orange Beach is the perfect destination for a memorable summer getaway. Join me as we dive into our experiences, coastal cuisine, and family-friendly attractions that make Orange Beach an idyllic summer retreat.
The Beaches and Water
Orange Beach boasts some of the most beautiful beaches along the Gulf Coast. Sink your toes into the soft, powdery sand as you bask in the warm sunshine and listen to the soothing sound of the waves. A few things to note about Orange Beach compared to other places. The water is a true deep turquoise almost jade color. It will rarely, if ever, be a light blue color like over in 30A, however when it's a clear jade it is quite beautiful. There is a lot more "beach" here than other places. Orange Beach has done an excellent job of retaining their beaches size so from where the water meets the sand to your resorts dock, there is a lot of space to relax and play.
Where to Stay
We've been to Orange Beach close to a dozen times over the years and have stayed at a host of different places. One of our favorites has probably been Turquoise Place. Every unit has an expansive balcony with a beautiful view of either sunset or sunrise. The resort has multiple pool areas, games for kids, two beach access points, tennis courts, a lazy river and more. We've always really enjoyed our time there - the only thing I will say is that in the summer, it can get very crowded. I would recommend going in the fall - that's when we tend to enjoy it the most.
A couple other places we've enjoyed are Perdido Beach Resort, any of the Phoenix resorts (most of them are quality), or it's a lot of fun staying on a house on either Terry Cove or Cotton Bayou and renting a boat. You can't go wrong with either option - I'd base it on what you like and who will be on the trip with you.
Gulf Coast Cuisine
Everyone's gotta eat and Orange Beach is flush with awesome spots. A couple very popular places are Lulu's and Tacky Jack's. Both are awesome in different ways. Lulu's is probably the most popular and busiest spot in Orange Beach. In addition to their open air and by the water dining, they have live music, sand games, a ropes course, gift shop and more. It's a great spot to let kids go be kids. Tacky Jack's has some really great views by the bay and you go for the always delicious Bushwacker frozen drink.
A few other places that we love are Big Fish - fresh seafood and sushi. Unassuming restaurant but they serve up delicious food. Voyagers is a great upscale spot but Louisiana Lagniappe takes the cake when it comes to the best overall food. Like I said, all these places are great and you won't be disappointed.
Last but not least to mention is the Flora-Bama. Whether you want to straddle the line, get a drink, have a meal or stay late for some live music and dancing - it has it all. Awesome spot to go and just have a good time!
Activities in Orange Beach
It goes without saying that the beach is a playground where you can make it what you want. Dig a hole, lay out in the sun, volleyball, football or frisbee - all are great fun and all can be enjoyed for free on the beach.
If you prefer to split your time away from the sand, there are plenty of things to do for the whole family. There is plenty of shopping spots around town to find whatever you may need. Adventure Island is always fun - they have an arcade, go carts, miniature golf and more. Golf is one of our favorite things to do away from the sand. Our favorite course is Craft Farms - it's a beautiful course that consists of three 9-hole courses and each day they pick a different combo for the course. Another is the Gulf Shoes Country Club - cheaper option than Craft Farms but still a lot of fun to play.
One of my favorite things to do is watch a storm roll in from the ocean. It is so cool to be able to sit and watch the weather change and move from over the water.
