Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort - A Rad Traveler Review
Nestled amidst the breathtaking Sonoran Desert landscape in Scottsdale, Arizona, lies the Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort, a haven of tranquility and luxury. With its awe-inspiring views, world-class amenities, and rejuvenating spa, this resort is truly a sanctuary for those seeking a blissful escape. Let's walk through this captivating, award winning spa resort.
The Resort
The resort is perched on side of the picturesque Camelback Mountain and offers breathtaking views of the desert panorama and mountains beyond. The rugged beauty of the Sonoran Desert, with its iconic saguaro cacti and vibrant flora, creates a stunning backdrop for your stay. Walking the grounds, we were delighted at the variety of cacti and how pristine everything was kept. Rugged, desert elegance is the way I would best describe it the scene.
The Room
The room we had was the very spacious Spa Suite. It was elegantly designed with an open and homey living area, large bedroom with a luxurious king size bed and spacious bathroom. We had two patios - one off the bathroom that led to the private oversize soaking tub and one off the living room - this one had a view of the city and mountains beyond. Our room was stocked with a variety of spirits and drinks, snacks and a Nespresso Vertuo coffee maker that we thoroughly enjoyed. If there was one thing we didn't like about the room (and this is us just being picky), it was the shower, specifically the showerhead. The shower itself is large and luxurious but it needs a rainfall showerhead or some other sort of oversized one. The one they have feels like one you'd find in the guest bath of a spec home. Other than that one tiny thing - the room was fantastic and we would choose that room again.
One tip when booking your room - try to get rooms 200-222 - these are located in the heart of the resort - the pool, gym, spa and restaurants are all extremely close but you still feel tucked away.
The Sanctuary Spa
The Sanctuary Spa is a true oasis of relaxation and well-being. Set against the backdrop of Camelback Mountain, this world-class spa offers a range of rejuvenating treatments inspired by nature and ancient healing practices. We took full advantage of the spa experience, getting multiple services during our stay. First, the services themselves were amazing. The different masseuses we had each day were extremely professional and knowledgeable and provided an experience to match the expected standard. The amenities to the spa were just ok for a spa resort of this caliber. Don't get me wrong - the locker room, showers and waiting area were nice. They were just lacking a bit, particularly in size. The hot tub/jacuzzi was very small, big enough for probably three people max. The waiting room was tight with a couch and two chairs. The "spa snacks" left us wanting more. Craisins and almonds with water and a tea that didn't taste so great. Again, all was very nice, just compact and lacking that uber luxurious experience I was hoping for. I expected it to resemble a Vegas spa with a sprawling water therapy system, juices, snacks, etc.
Food and Drink
The resort offers several dining options, each providing a unique culinary journey. Indulge in farm-to-table cuisine at Elements restaurant, where innovative dishes are crafted with locally sourced ingredients. Or savor handcrafted cocktails and delectable bites at Jade Bar, a sophisticated lounge with panoramic views of the mountains. Both the bar and restaurant offer incredible views of the city and mountain landscape beyond. Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays is unique and magnificent so definitely check that out.
A favorite drink of ours was the Little Leaf cocktail. The wagyu dumplings were a delicious way to start the meal and the Korean short rib was incredible. Finish it off with a cappuccino and a Candy Bar and you'll rest easy that night. If Hurley is at the Jade Bar - sidle up next to him and he will take excellent care of you.
Pool and Other Amenities
Resting below the restaurant is the refreshing infinity pool with it's attentive staff. With the heat in the summer, the pool was a great way to relax and refresh each afternoon. The staff are attentive and professional. They remembered our name from the first time we came out, constantly were asking how to help or taking drink/food orders. Highly recommend getting a cabana if it's a scorcher.
The gym and fitness areas were really well done. The layout was great and the equipment was what you'd expect at a place like this. Plenty of cardio machines, free weights, weight machines and floor space. There was also a multi-purpose room for spin, kickboxing, yoga and other classes offered throughout the day. Behind the gym was a two lane, 25 meter lap pool for lap swim and some aquatics classes.
Outside the gym area is a racquet sports area. Beautiful pickleball and hard court tennis courts with view of the mountains make for a fantastic spot to play. Mornings and mid to late afternoons were prime times for the courts.
Helpful Tips
- They have a resort vehicle (Lincoln Navigator) that will drive you or pick you up if you're within 3 miles of the resort. This service runs till 10 pm and was very convenient - best of all, it's free!
- They will text you within about a half hour of check-in. This is very useful here unlike some other resorts I've been to. You can ask any question and they'll either be able to answer or have someone call you to help. They can bring ice, schedule the car, book a court, etc.
- GC in Elements, Hurley at Jade Bar, Evelyn at the pool. Those are the names to remember and seek out - they'll take great care of you.
